Training Policy
Southbourne Canoe Club (SCC) endeavours to provide both formal training, recognised by the British Canoe Union, and informal training organised by club members. Training is however dependent upon the goodwill of our more senior members and can only be provided free of charge with their consent. There is no automatic entitlement to it as a member.

From 2009 anyone wishing to do training must be a member of the club before signing up with the Training Officer.

Formal Training
Formal training will follow the requirements of the BCU star test system. SCC coaches (time and goodwill permitting) are able to provide the following:

  • Inland kayaking - 1, 2 and 3 star level training & assessment, plus 4 star training.
  • Sea kayaking - 1, 2 and 3 star level training & assessment, plus 4 star training.
  • Open canoeing - 1 & 2 star training.
  • Surf kayaking - not available at present.

Coach training can be arranged via the club through the District BCU Training officer.

Training Costs
As mentioned above there is no automatic entitlement to formal training.  It is provided by club members on a goodwill basis and as such is free of charge. If you require training on a more personal (or rapid) basis then you should approach one of our coaches and enquire as to any fees payable.

Assessment Costs (Star Tests)
There is a £5.00 charge (to cover the cost of providing certificates and badges) for each stage of the BCU Star tests.  The charge is payable upon successful completion of each assessment.
